Trump says He is the Target of Department Of Justice’s January 6 Grand Jury Investigation
Former President Donald Trump has confirmed that he is a target of the Department of Justice’s (DOJ) Jan. 6 grand jury investigation. According to the Guardian on Tuesday, July 18, 2023, the investigation focuses on the deadly Capitol riot that shook the foundation of American democracy on January 6, 2021.
Trump stated that he received the letter on Sunday and that he expects to be arrested as well as indicted. According to a government source with direct knowledge of the issue, Smith’s office also sent Trump a target letter.
“Deranged Jack Smith, prosecutor with Joe Biden’s DOJ, sent me a letter (again, it was a Sunday night!) stating that I am the TARGET of the January 6th Grand Jury Investigation, and giving me a very short four days to report to the Grand Jury, which almost always means an arrest or indictment,” Trump wrote on Truth Social.
“So now, Joe Biden’s Attorney General, Merrick Garland, whom I turned down for the United States Supreme Court (in retrospect, based on his corrupt and unethical actions, a very wise decision! ),” Trump said.
Regarding the Trump-Russia inquiry, Trump stated, “They illegally spied on my Campaign, attacked me with a Fake “Dossier” that was funded by Hillary Clinton’s Campaign and the DNC.” After years of probing the origins of that probe, Special Counsel John Durham issued his much-anticipated report in May, concluding that it should never have been opened.
Further reflecting, Trump stated that he was impeached twice but “won,” implying that he was acquitted both times by the Senate. “They failed on the Mueller Witch Hunt, they failed on Russia, Russia, Russia Hoax, the 51 ‘intelligence’ agents fraud, the FBI/Twitter files, the DOJ/Facebook censorship, and every other scam imaginable,” he said, pointing to his indictment issued this spring by Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg’s office.
Trump also hinted that a “probable fourth” indictment could be on the way from Atlanta, where investigators are looking into whether he pressed election officials to change the outcome of the 2020 election.
Regarding Jan. 6, 2021, Trump stated that under the Constitution, he has “the right to protest an Election that I am fully convinced was Rigged and Stolen, just as the Democrats did against me in 2016, and many others throughout history.”
“But the Democrats have gone much further than has ever happened before—they cheated in the elections,” Trump charged. “Instead of focusing on the CHEATERS, the WEAPONIZED DOJ AND FBI target and harass those who speak out about the cheaters and the massive fraud that occurred.”
While the former president has maintained that he bears no responsibility for inciting the violence, investigators are meticulously examining his actions and public statements in the weeks leading up to January 6. The evidence they uncover could have far-reaching consequences for Trump, potentially impacting his political legacy and future endeavors.
The revelation also has significant implications for the nation’s political landscape. The investigation, and any subsequent legal proceedings, are likely to reignite partisan tensions and further divide an already polarized country. Trump’s ardent supporters may see the investigation as a politically motivated witch hunt, while his critics will demand justice and accountability.
The DOJ’s grand jury investigation into the Capitol riot is just one part of a broader effort to uncover the truth behind the events of that day. Multiple congressional committees have conducted their inquiries, examining security failures, law enforcement responses, and the role of political figures in the lead-up to the violence.
