A pro-Palestine protester interrupted Vice President Kamala Harris during a rally in Savannah, Georgia, on Thursday, but the situation was quickly diffused as the crowd rallied behind the Democratic presidential nominee.

As Harris spoke about “hard-fought and hard-won fundamental freedoms,” a protester began shouting from behind her. Harris initially continued speaking, but the audience quickly drowned out the protesters with loud chants of “Kamala.” Harris briefly turned to assess the situation, smiling as the crowd showed their support.

Attempting to restore order, Harris addressed the audience directly. “Let me just say something. Hold on. Hold up. Hold up for a second. Let me just say something,” she urged, signaling the crowd to quiet down.

As Harris supporters attempted to move the protester away, the individual, who was waving a black and white keffiyeh scarf, continued to make her presence known. Despite the disruption, no law enforcement appeared to be involved in the altercation, told CBS News.

Harris took the opportunity to address the protester’s concerns, emphasizing the importance of democratic values. “We are fighting for a democracy,” she explained. “Everyone has a right and should have their voices heard. I am speaking now, but on the subject, I will say this — the president and I are working around the clock. We’ve got to get a hostage deal done and get a cease-fire done now.”

Her remarks were met with enthusiastic applause from the crowd, and Harris continued with her planned speech. Pro-Palestine protests have become a recurring feature at rallies for Harris and other Democratic figures, including during events for Joe Biden. Similar demonstrations have also occurred at the Israeli Consulate in downtown Chicago during the Democratic Party Convention.

Harris’s handling of the interruption highlighted her commitment to addressing complex international issues while maintaining focus on her campaign message. The incident underscored the ongoing tensions surrounding U.S. policy in the Middle East, even as the 2024 election campaign intensifies.
