Jill Biden “Shocked” by Republicans’ Continued Support for Trump Amid Legal Troubles
As former President Donald Trump faces mounting legal challenges ahead of the 2024 presidential elections, many of his former staff members have testified against him. Despite these setbacks, some Republicans continue to stand by him, a fact that has left First Lady Jill Biden “shocked.”
During a solo campaign event in June 2023, Jill Biden expressed her surprise at Trump’s continued dominance in the polls, despite multiple indictments. “They don’t care about the indictment, so that’s a little shocking, I think,” she said, referring to the unwavering support Trump still receives from many Republicans, according to AP News.
Meanwhile, President Joe Biden has remained silent on Trump’s legal issues, refusing to comment on the ongoing investigations. He has, however, firmly denied any accusations of political interference, stating, “Never once, not one single time, have I suggested to the Justice Department what they should do or not do,” in response to Trump’s claims that the investigations against him are part of a “witch hunt.”
Jill Biden, speaking to a small group of Democrats in Manhattan, said she was struck by a headline suggesting that many Republicans would still vote for Trump, even as he faced legal scrutiny. At the time, Trump was scheduled to appear in a Florida courtroom.
During her speech, Jill Biden urged Democratic donors to choose between “the strong, steady leadership” of President Joe Biden and the “chaos and corruption, hatred, and division” of “MAGA Republicans.” Without directly naming Trump, she referred to his time in office from 2016 to 2020 as “dark days” that America “cannot go back to.” She emphasized, “We know what’s in store with the MAGA Republicans. We just know it, right? We’ve lived it. We’ve seen it.”
Jill Biden, also a community college English professor, was on a three-day fundraising trip, starting in New York and later visiting California, including events in San Francisco and Los Angeles. Her goal was to raise funds for President Biden’s 2024 campaign, as well as for the Democratic National Committee and state party committees.
Throughout her husband’s political career, Jill has been a crucial supporter, particularly during his first run in 2020. According to a former senior Biden adviser, Jill is actively involved in campaign strategy discussions, although she ultimately defers to her husband’s decisions. “She is always his final gut check,” the adviser noted.
