Caroline Giuliani on Trump and Her Father: ‘He Will Not Preserve Our Democracy’
Caroline Giuliani, daughter of Rudy Giuliani, became emotional during a CNN interview with Sara Sidner on Thursday, expanding on her recent Vanity Fair piece in which she accused Donald Trump of “taking away” her father and urged the nation to support Vice President Kamala Harris. In the interview, she expressed deep concerns about the future of American democracy under a second Trump term.
The key message, Caroline emphasized, was that “Donald Trump will not preserve our democracy. That is very, very clear.”
Sidner asked Caroline about the complex relationship between her father and Trump. “You talk a lot about your father and Donald Trump, and what you think Donald Trump has done to him,” Sidner said. “What, in your mind, has happened to your father? And why do you think Donald Trump has had such an influence on him?”
Caroline responded, “I think it has something to do with power, but the reason I get asked that question a lot is because my situation is so unbelievably relatable. There’s not one person I know who hasn’t lost a close friend or family member over Donald Trump.”
She explained that this divide goes beyond typical political disagreements, pointing to the “toxic cruelty” of Trump’s views, which she believes target women, people of color, the LGBTQ+ community, and others who don’t conform to his vision. “It makes it very hard to have a relationship with someone who supports a man like that,” she said. Still, she emphasized the importance of seeing humanity in others, though she acknowledged that under another Trump presidency, that would be “really, really hard for a lot of people.”
Caroline argued that the country’s only chance at healing lies with Kamala Harris. “The only way our nation has a chance at healing is if we put Kamala Harris in the White House. She is our only chance of healing this country,” she stated.
Reflecting on her father’s current state, amid mounting legal battles and financial ruin due to his work for Trump, Caroline shared her sadness. “I think he’s in a lot of pain, but he doesn’t show it,” she said. “I know that I’m in a lot of pain seeing our country in the grips of this man who does not care about citizens.”
She reiterated her belief that Trump is solely driven by a desire for power. “All Trump cares about is maintaining power. He’s made that very, very clear,” Caroline added, underscoring the need to elect Kamala Harris, whom she praised as someone who has “spent her life fighting for the people.”
