Florida Congressman Byron Donalds, a staunch ally of President-elect Donald Trump, is reportedly preparing to run for governor in the upcoming election, according to NBC News. Donalds has been meeting with key donors and political figures in Florida to lay the groundwork for his campaign to replace term-limited Governor Ron DeSantis.
Rumors of his potential candidacy have been swirling for months but have gained traction in recent days. “He was in town [Tallahassee] meeting with all the folks you need to meet with. He told them he is in,” a source who spoke with Donalds told NBC News. “It’s the steps any candidate takes as they prepare to run for governor.”
When approached for comment, Donalds did not deny his intentions but maintained that his primary focus remains on advancing Trump’s agenda. “Florida will proudly lead the way,” Donalds told NBC News, emphasizing his commitment to the “America First Agenda.”
Donalds is not the only high-profile name linked to the governor’s race. Disgraced former Congressman Matt Gaetz has also been mentioned as a potential contender. Gaetz, who has faced accusations of sexual misconduct with an underage girl, bribery, and other allegations—charges he vehemently denies—has hinted at his interest in the position.
“Florida needs a Governor who can break the control insurance companies have over Tallahassee. I can do that, so it’s something Ginger and I are considering,” Gaetz said in a statement to NBC News.
Donalds’ entry into the race could set up an intriguing primary battle between two polarizing figures with strong ties to Trump and his political movement. While Donalds is seen as a disciplined and steady supporter of Trump’s agenda, Gaetz’s outspoken and controversial reputation has earned him both loyal supporters and fierce critics.
