‘I found it quite intimidating, I must say’: Julie Andrews Shares Heartwarming Moments with Dick Van Dyke
Julie Andrews recently took a stroll down memory lane, reminiscing about her enduring friendship with her Mary Poppins co-star, Dick Van Dyke.
In an interview with PEOPLE, the renowned Princess Diaries actress shared some unforgettable moments she had experienced with Dick Van Dyke as part of the special program, “Dick Van Dyke 98 Years of Magic,” which aired on December 21st in celebration of his birthday.
“It was my first time making a movie, and I had given birth to my lovely daughter, Emma, just six weeks prior. I quickly realized that I needed to step up my game,” she reflected.
Andrews candidly admitted, “I found it quite intimidating, I must say.”
Nonetheless, the Oscar-winning actress revealed that her apprehensions began to fade away as she continued, “Dick couldn’t have been more kind, genuinely sweet, and helpful. I’d like to believe that we instantly formed a bond.”
Recalling how the now 98-year-old actor would make her burst into laughter between takes, Andrews fondly noted, “It was pure joy to watch him mimic the animated penguins or attempt to ride the carousel pony, transforming into a magical chimney sweep.”
“In reality, it was a very joyful film shoot for, I believe, the entire cast and crew,” she remarked.
Furthermore, Andrews expressed her feeling of immense gratitude for having Dick Van Dyke as her co-star during her “first foray into Hollywood.” She described herself as feeling “fortunate” to share the screen with him.
