Selena Gomez Shares Desire for Motherhood, Takes Advice from Friend Mariska Hargitay
Selena Gomez recently opened up about her future aspirations of becoming a mother, revealing that she has been taking parenting advice from her friend, Law & Order: SVU actress Mariska Hargitay. In a candid conversation for Interview Magazine, the pop star discussed her dreams of one day balancing her career and motherhood, drawing inspiration from Hargitay’s approach to parenting.
Gomez, 31, fondly recalled a day when she picked up Hargitay’s kids from school, describing the experience as “normal and real.” She asked Hargitay, “How does balancing things — because I remember I went to go pick up your kids from school one day, and I loved that. That felt so normal and real. How do you balance that? Because one day I hope to do that.”
Hargitay, a mother of three, responded with encouragement, assuring Gomez that motherhood is possible, even for working moms with demanding careers. “And you will,” Hargitay said. “For all working moms, it’s hard. There have been so many times when I’m torn or frustrated because, in our jobs, you can’t say, ‘Guys, I’m not coming in today.’ But I’ve integrated them here. My kids come to work with me.”
Hargitay also shared her philosophy on balancing her career with raising her children. “Are there things I miss? Yeah. The flip side is that my kids are really proud of me,” she explained. “I talk to them a lot about what kind of life they want, who they want to be, how they want to spend their time, and what they want to give back.”
The actress then recalled how she brought her son August to work every day during his first year, offering Gomez practical advice. “You can, too. It’s doable,” Hargitay told her. “I am happier and living a fuller life, and they feel that and see that. And when I’m with them, I’m with them.”
This heartfelt exchange comes as Gomez recently revealed a personal and emotional aspect of her journey toward motherhood. In an interview with Vanity Fair, she shared the difficult news that she is unable to carry her own children due to medical conditions. “I haven’t ever said this…but I unfortunately can’t carry my own children,” Gomez admitted. “I have a lot of medical issues that would put my life and the baby’s in jeopardy. That was something I had to grieve for a while.”
Despite this challenge, Gomez remains hopeful about becoming a mother one day, exploring other possibilities and finding inspiration from friends like Hargitay. As she continues to navigate her health and future plans, Gomez is focusing on what lies ahead, embracing the potential for motherhood in whatever form it may take.
