Kourtney Kardashian Opens Up About Harrowing Emergency Fetal Surgery on ‘The Kardashians
In the latest season premiere of The Kardashians, which started streaming on May 23, Kourtney Kardashian shared a deeply personal account of her pregnancy, including a harrowing experience of undergoing emergency fetal surgery. At 45 years old, this pregnancy with her first child with husband Travis Barker, 48, brought both joy and significant challenges.
Kourtney revealed that despite generally feeling great and enjoying many joyful moments throughout her pregnancy, she faced a critical situation that required immediate medical intervention. This emergency occurred while she was 31 and a half weeks pregnant, a time when she was still adjusting to the impending realities of motherhood. She described having “pinch-me moments,” overwhelmed by the notion of becoming a mother, told TODAY.
“By the time he got home, I had already had my surgery because they had to do it right away. So my mom took me and Travis came to the hospital as soon as he landed,” she noted on Thursday’s episode. “He slept at the hospital with me.” “I feel great. I feel the oxytocin and all the good pregnancy hormones,” Kourtney, who was “31 and a half” weeks pregnant while filming, shared. “I have, like, pinch-me moments all day long where I am like, ‘Wait, we are really having a baby.’”
“We had planned a scan at home, so all the kids could see the baby, and Travis was about to leave for tour,” she said in a confessional. “The doctor who will come to the house to do the scan is a high-risk doctor who is really detailed and thorough, and something caught his eye where he wanted me to see a couple of specialists.”
The surgery itself was a distressing ordeal for Kourtney, particularly because Travis could not be by her side. This separation added an extra layer of difficulty to an already intense situation, leaving her feeling scared and alone during the procedure.
Travis Barker, known for his role as the drummer in Blink-182, had to cut his international tour short in September 2023 due to Kourtney’s medical emergency. He rushed back to California to be with her, a decision spurred by the urgent need for his support during this critical time. Kourtney described Travis as worried and feeling disconnected during his travel back, struggling to get through to her and eager to be by her side.
This episode in The Kardashians offers viewers a raw look at the vulnerabilities and complexities of pregnancy, especially under the scrutiny of the public eye. Kourtney’s candid sharing of her experience sheds light on the support systems that are crucial during such emergencies and the intense emotional rollercoaster that expectant mothers can face.
