Katy Perry Opens Up About Relationship Challenges and Growth with Orlando Bloom
Katy Perry recently reflected on the ups and downs of her relationship with fiancé Orlando Bloom during an appearance on Alex Cooper’s Call Her Daddy podcast on September 4. The singer candidly shared that their connection wasn’t smooth from the beginning.
“We weren’t really in it from day one,” Perry revealed. She explained that while Bloom was committed from the start, having just completed a period of celibacy and set clear intentions, she wasn’t in the same place. “I was fresh out of a relationship, and I was just like, ‘I can’t do this anymore. I need to swim in a different pond,’” Perry explained, to HELLO!
Perry admitted that she “had yet to do some real work” on herself, while Bloom had gone through significant personal growth during a “weeklong retreat,” where he learned to rewire bad habits through physical activities. When he returned, Perry noticed a change in his behavior. “He wasn’t playing this cat-mouse game with me anymore,” she said.
Used to the “push-pull” dynamic in relationships, Perry confessed that she initially played games for the dopamine rush. “It was what I knew,” she told Cooper. However, as both Perry and Bloom worked on themselves, their relationship began to evolve.
The couple, who initially dated from January 2016 to March 2017, parted ways for nearly a year. During their time apart, Perry revealed that she gained tools that transformed her mindset. “It changed my life, it saved my life,” she said, adding, “I would be dead without it. I would not be on this planet without that process and medication.”
Perry explained that this personal growth helped her reframe how she viewed herself and allowed her to connect her “head to [her] heart.” Despite their separation, she shared that she and Bloom “kind of” stayed in touch, and by February 2018, the couple had officially reconciled. Their journey, Perry explained, has been one of mutual growth and understanding, ultimately bringing them closer as they continue to navigate life together.
