Meghan Markle is once again facing criticism after Prince Harry’s decision to step away from Sentebale — the charity he co-founded in 2006 to honour his late mother, Princess Diana. The move has left many close to the organisation stunned, including a key figure from Lesotho who questioned Harry’s commitment and the influence of his new life.
Prince Harry founded Sentebale alongside Prince Seeiso of Lesotho, aiming to support children and young people affected by HIV/AIDS. The charity, named Sentebale — meaning “forget-me-not” in the Sesotho language — was a heartfelt tribute to Princess Diana’s legacy and humanitarian efforts in Africa.
But now, Chief Khoabane Theko, brother of Prince Seeiso, is voicing his disappointment and confusion over Harry’s exit from the charity. Speaking to The Telegraph, he said, “I’m surprised that he’s relinquishing the [charity] at this stage when one expected that he would jealously guard it, because it’s under his mother’s legacy and I thought he would want to die for it.”
Harry’s resignation came amid a bitter fallout involving the board and chairperson Dr. Sophie Chandauka, who accused the Duke of Sussex of bullying and the charity of corruption. Despite these claims, Harry and Seeiso supported the trustees and stepped down together.

However, Chief Khoabane believes there’s more behind Harry’s decision — particularly pointing to a change in behavior following his marriage to Meghan Markle and their relocation to the U.S. “I do not believe it comes easy to [Harry] to want to give it up, like he’s doing – it’s a little bit strange for me,” he said.
He also noted Meghan’s absence from Lesotho despite having visited Africa with Harry on holiday. “Did she never come to Lesotho, Meghan? No, she hasn’t. So it seems like she’s a far-away person for us; we do not know about her,” he stated. “I was surprised to see them come to Botswana but not Lesotho.”
Still, Khoabane holds out hope that Harry may return to the charity one day, saying perhaps he left because “he is prepared to come after and come fix it and get it back.” For now, many in Lesotho are left grappling with the idea that Harry may have walked away from a cause once so close to his heart.
