Meghan Markle is once again under fire, this time from former Vanity Fair editor Graydon Carter, who has publicly criticized the Duchess of Sussex for her expectations surrounding her 2017 magazine cover and interview.
Speaking to Page Six, Carter claimed Meghan was “unhappy” with how the article turned out, as she had hoped to spotlight her charitable work rather than her then-budding romance with Prince Harry.

“This woman is slightly adrift on the facts and reality,” Carter remarked, suggesting Meghan misunderstood the nature of such high-profile media coverage.
The 2017 feature marked Meghan’s first major magazine appearance amid growing public interest in her relationship with Prince Harry. At the time, she was still an actress best known for her role in Suits, and her romance with a British royal was drawing global attention.
During the interview, Meghan reportedly grew frustrated when the topic shifted toward her personal life. According to Carter, she questioned the direction of the interview, asking, “Excuse me, is this going to all be about Prince Harry? Because I thought we were going to be talking about my charities and my philanthropy.”

Carter’s comments have reignited debate around Meghan’s relationship with the press, which has long been fraught with tension. While the Duchess has often emphasized her desire to focus on meaningful causes and humanitarian efforts, critics argue that her expectations of media coverage are unrealistic given her public profile and royalties.

In addition to his comments on Meghan, Carter also weighed in on the ongoing rift within the royal family, particularly between Prince Harry and his brother, Prince William. “Princess Diana would have been deeply saddened by the rift between her sons,” he said.
Meghan and Prince Harry began dating in 2016 and were married in 2018 in a globally televised royal ceremony. Two years later, the couple stepped back from their official roles as senior working royals and relocated to North America, citing privacy concerns and media pressure.
The resurfacing of this magazine interview controversy serves as yet another reminder of the ongoing complexities between the Sussexes, the media, and their evolving public narrative.
