Kate Middleton Displayed “Tension” When Family Was Mentioned in Engagement Interview, Expert Claims

Kate Middleton showed subtle signs of tension when discussing her family during a 2010 interview with ITV, according to a body language expert. The interview took place shortly after her engagement to Prince William was announced, and a new analysis suggests that certain topics made the now-Princess of Wales visibly uncomfortable.
Prince William and Kate Middleton got engaged in October 2010 during a private holiday in Kenya, with William proposing using his late mother Princess Diana’s sapphire engagement ring. The engagement was publicly announced on November 16, 2010, and later that day, the couple sat down for an interview with British journalist Tom Bradby.
In a recent Channel 5 documentary titled Kate in Her Own Words, two body language experts analyzed the couple’s interaction during the interview. One of the experts, Judi James, pointed out moments where Kate appeared uneasy, particularly when discussing her own family. Bradby had asked about their family backgrounds, to which Kate responded that she had a “close-knit family” and emphasized the importance of family to both herself and William.
However, according to James, Kate’s body language shifted when her family was mentioned. “We can see there are signs of tension from Kate. Kate’s family is mentioned, and this seems to make her more nervous than actually speaking about the royals,” said James. This, she suggested, indicated that the subject of her non-royal family might have been a sensitive topic for Kate at the time.
As the interview progressed, Prince William discussed the moment he asked Kate’s father for her hand in marriage. He joked that he had asked Kate first, as her father “couldn’t really say no.” According to James, William’s light-hearted remark seemed to make Kate feel somewhat uneasy. “We can see her swallow. She sucks her lips in, and that usually is a sign of a lack of desire to talk at that particular point, maybe feeling a little bit awkward, maybe even a little bit anxious,” James explained.
She also noted Kate’s subtle finger tapping, which she interpreted as a sign of impatience or discomfort with the direction of the conversation. “A finger tap usually means a little bit of impatience, and I’d probably prefer you to move on from this particular subject,” James added.
Another body language expert, Mike Carter, supported these observations, stating that Kate appeared to hesitate when speaking about her family. He suggested that she became “very cautious” during this portion of the interview.
Despite the brief tension during the engagement interview, Prince William and Kate have been happily married for 13 years and share three children: Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis. While Kate’s parents, Carole and Michael Middleton, are not part of the royal family, they have grown close to the royal circle over the years.
In a rare public appearance, Carole and Michael recently appeared in a video update on Kate’s cancer advocacy work, reinforcing their supportive role in their daughter’s life as she navigates her royal duties.
