VP Kamala Harris’ Senior Aide Returning To Congressional Black Caucus
Kamala Harris’ deputy director of public engagement and intergovernmental affairs, Vincent Evans, is departing to join the Congressional Black Caucus (CBC).
The CBC is an organization of Black legislators who fight for problems that affect minorities across the country. Evans will take over as the group’s executive director after serving as Harris’ political director in the run-up to the 2020 election and transition.
Evans, who got his start in politics at the CBC, said in a statement that he is looking forward to returning to the organization.
“I am deeply honored to be named the executive director of the Congressional Black Caucus,” he said. “I started my career in Washington working for a member of the CBC, so I know firsthand the tremendous leadership and impact this caucus has in Congress and across the country.”
As per Blackenterprise, Evans is the third aide to Harris to resign in the last few months. The departures come amidst reports of tension, dysfunction, and conflict. CNN reported frustrations within the White House directed at Harris and her chief of staff, Tina Flournoy.
After brief periods in the vice president’s office, Symone Sanders, Harris’ former chief spokesperson, and Ashley Etienne, Harris’ former communications director, both left.
However, the L.A. Times reported Evans is leaving on good terms with Vice President Biden and intends to continue a close relationship with her.
The CBC chair Joyce Beatty praised Evans in a statement.
“As a leader for effective change, Vincent will help the CBC reach greater heights and make substantive advances in 2022,” Beatty said. “Vincent knows the importance of developing critical relationships when it comes to public engagement, along with a variety of policy and leadership skills. In addition to his experience, he brings great passion for further strengthening the CBC’s top priorities moving forward. His knowledge and past work with many members and the administration is a big asset.”
Evans was on Congressman Al Lawson’s (D-FL) senior staff from 2017 to 2019, before joining Harris’ team. He previously served in the Florida Senate and then in city administration in Tallahassee as the chief aide to the city commissioner, where he was in charge of establishing and implementing policy priorities and initiatives.
