A new poll by YouGov and The Economist reveals that President Donald Trump’s approval rating has dropped to just 41%—a number lower than his pick for “worst president in history,” Joe Biden.

By comparison, at this point in his presidency, Biden held a net positive approval rating of +11%, highlighting a stark contrast between Trump’s rhetoric and the current public sentiment.
Trump’s support breaks down sharply across party lines. Among Democrats, only 7% approve of his leadership. Independents show limited support at 30%, while 86% of Republicans continue to back him, showing the GOP base remains solidly behind him.
Gender also plays a role in the divide. The poll found 45% of men approve of Trump’s administration, while only 37% of women expressed support. On key policy areas such as immigration, Trump faces growing dissatisfaction, with a -5% net approval rating on that front.
Trump entered his second term with stronger numbers. In January, shortly after his return to office, 49% of Americans approved of his job performance compared to 43% who disapproved. But the most recent poll marks a significant decline, signaling a shift in public confidence over the months that followed.

The YouGov findings align with a recent Pew Research Center poll, which similarly placed Trump’s approval at just 40%. The Pew poll noted that such low numbers are historically rare, especially in the early months of a presidency. The only comparable figure in recent decades came from President Bill Clinton, who had a 49% approval rating in April 1993.
Policy decisions appear to be influencing the downturn. According to Pew, 59% of Americans disapprove of Trump’s tariff policies, while 55% oppose sweeping federal cuts made by the Trump administration in coordination with Elon Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency.

Support among independents is also plummeting. Just ten days ago, Trump broke his own record with a new low approval rating of -22% among independent voters—an 8-point drop. Many cited a lack of clarity on economic strategy, particularly regarding ongoing trade wars.
Despite the criticism over tariffs and the economy, polling suggests some independents still support Trump’s immigration enforcement policies. Nevertheless, the overall numbers paint a picture of waning confidence as the former president faces growing scrutiny across key demographics.
