President Donald Trump is reportedly considering recognizing Crimea as Russian territory as part of a potential future deal to end the war in Ukraine, according to a new report. Two sources told Semafor that the administration is exploring the possibility of formally acknowledging Crimea—the Black Sea peninsula Russia invaded and annexed in 2014—as part of Russia.
Additionally, the report states that Trump may urge the United Nations to follow suit in recognizing Russian sovereignty over the region. “Such a request would align the Trump administration with the position of Russian President Vladimir Putin, who has long seen Crimea as his nation’s territory,” the report said. Trump is set to speak with Putin on Tuesday regarding a potential 30-day ceasefire in Ukraine.

Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky has remained steadfast in his refusal to cede any land as part of a peace agreement with Russia. However, Secretary of State Marco Rubio suggested last week that Zelensky may be open to negotiations. According to The New York Times, Rubio stated that a willingness to consider territorial concessions was a necessary precondition ahead of upcoming diplomatic discussions.

Trump, speaking to the press on Sunday, indicated that negotiators have already been discussing “dividing up certain assets,” the report stated. The prospect of Crimea’s recognition as Russian territory has sparked debate, as it would represent a dramatic shift in U.S. policy and could have broad geopolitical implications.

Many Western nations, including the United States, have refused to acknowledge Russia’s annexation of Crimea, instead maintaining that the territory remains part of Ukraine under international law. As discussions continue, the White House has declined to comment on the matter, leaving uncertainty over the administration’s ultimate stance on Crimea and the broader Ukraine conflict.
