Former President Donald Trump’s campaign rally in South Florida showcased increasingly bizarre claims, as observed by Richard Luscombe for The Guardian. Luscombe attended the event and noted the escalation in Trump’s rhetoric.

At his rally held at the Trump National Doral Miami golf club, Trump reiterated several of his well-known assertions, such as the false claim that the U.S. is no longer energy-independent and the outlandish idea that the U.S. military would be forced to adopt electric tanks. However, he introduced a new claim regarding inflation under President Joe Biden.

The rally “touched on the surreal,” wrote Luscombe. Trump asserted that President Biden had raised the price of bacon four-fold, stating, “We don’t eat bacon anymore.” This claim is demonstrably false. During the last full year of Trump’s presidency, bacon prices averaged $5.58 per pound, peaked at $7.31 per pound in 2022, and the most recent statistics show a price of $6.82 per pound. Additionally, wages have been rising faster than prices for over a year, meaning that the purchasing power for bacon remains comparable to what it was during most of Trump’s presidency.

Trump’s rally was also notable for his unconventional challenges to President Biden. He called for another debate with “no moderators” and “no holds barred,” proposing an 18-round golf match that would conclude with Trump donating $1 million to a charity of Biden’s choice if Biden were to defeat him.

President Biden, who was engaged in a NATO summit for much of the week, reacted dismissively to Trump’s challenge. His campaign issued a statement, noting, “Donald Trump hasn’t been seen in public for 12 days, now he’s inviting fictional serial killers to dinner, teasing lil’ Marco Rubio, praising Project 2025 architect Tom Homan, and challenging the President of the United States to golf.”

Trump’s rhetoric and challenges at the South Florida rally highlight his continued use of bold and often unfounded claims to energize his base. Luscombe’s account from The Guardian captures the increasingly surreal nature of Trump’s public appearances and his relentless pursuit of the spotlight.
