Donald Trump has been working to address the backlash following his controversial visit to Arlington National Cemetery, where reports surfaced that two of his staffers were involved in an altercation with an official who was trying to enforce rules against photographing gravesites. During the visit, the former president and Republican nominee posed for photos and videos with the families of two service members who were killed in an August 2021 bombing attack.

Many critics questioned why Trump posed with a grin and his customary thumbs-up gesture during such a solemn occasion. A spokesperson for the cemetery confirmed that two campaign staffers engaged in a verbal and physical altercation with an official at the site. “We can confirm there was an incident, and a report was filed,” said the cemetery spokesperson.

In response, Trump campaign spokesman Stephen Cheung denied the allegations of a physical confrontation, stating that the team was prepared to release footage to refute these “defamatory claims.” Late Tuesday night, Trump posted a statement signed by the parents of one of the fallen service members, expressing their gratitude for his visit, told CNN.

“We would like to express our heartfelt thoughts and appreciation to President Donald J. Trump for his presence at the recent Section 60 gathering, honoring our children and their fallen brothers and sisters,” the statement read. “On the three-year anniversary of the Abbey Gate bombing, the president and his team conducted themselves with nothing but the utmost respect and dignity for all of our service members, especially our beloved children.”

According to a source familiar with the incident, the official was attempting to enforce a federal law that prohibits political campaigns or election-related activities within Army National Military Cemeteries. Cheung, however, described the official as someone experiencing a “mental health episode.”

The families’ statement further clarified that they had given approval for Trump’s official videographer and photographer to attend the event to ensure that these “sacred moments of remembrance were respectfully captured.”

“We are deeply grateful to the president for taking the time to honor our children and for standing alongside us in our grief, offering his unwavering support during such a difficult time,” the statement continued. “His compassion and respect meant more than words can express.” Trump’s efforts to control the narrative around the incident underscore the ongoing challenges he faces as he navigates the political landscape leading up to the next election.
