The prominent law firm Perkins Coie is pushing back against an executive order issued by President Donald Trump, filing a sweeping lawsuit that accuses his administration of political repression. The lawsuit, filed with the legal backing of powerhouse firm Williams & Connolly, has drawn praise from legal experts and political observers alike.
Trump’s order specifically targeted Perkins Coie, a well-respected firm in the legal field, widely seen as retaliation for its role in opposing his efforts to overturn the 2020 presidential election results. The directive strips the firm—and anyone associated with it—of security clearances, government contracts, and access to federal buildings.

In its legal challenge, Perkins Coie argues that the order constitutes multiple violations of the Bill of Rights, asserting, “Perkins Coie cannot allow its clients to be bullied.” Legal experts quickly rallied behind the firm’s bold response.
“Great to see Perkins Coie challenge Trump’s order banning them from security clearances, government contracts, and federal buildings,” wrote former federal prosecutor Barbara McQuade on X. “And good for Williams & Connolly for not only representing them but having 15 lawyers sign their names to the complaint.”

Leslie Proll, a voting rights attorney with the Leadership Conference, echoed the sentiment. “Law firm fights back on behalf of all of us,” she wrote. “We cannot allow them to come for the lawyers. Full stop.”

Never-Trump conservative attorney George Conway also weighed in, emphasizing the significance of the legal challenge. “I cannot overstate how much I love the fact that Williams & Connolly put 14 individual lawyers’ names in the signature block of their complaint,” he wrote. “W&C is sending a clear message: We are not afraid. BRAVO.”
The lawsuit marks a high-profile clash over the limits of executive power and the potential weaponization of government authority against legal professionals. With the case now moving through the courts, legal observers anticipate a protracted legal battle that could have significant implications for the independence of the legal profession and constitutional protections against political retaliation.
