On the March 5 episode of The View, co-host Sunny Hostin expressed her disappointment with Democratic lawmakers for failing to walk out in solidarity with Representative Al Green (D-Texas) during President Donald Trump’s address to Congress. The event, which took place on March 4, saw Green being removed from the chamber by House Speaker Mike Johnson after he raised his cane in protest.
Green’s demonstration was the most striking act of defiance from the Democrats that evening, while others resorted to holding signs and donning coordinated outfits. However, Hostin felt that more needed to be done and expected fellow Democrats to follow Green’s lead.

“What I saw when Representative Al Green stood up and said, ‘You don’t have a mandate to take away Medicaid,’ and he was tossed out, I expected the rest of his Democratic caucus, the rest of his colleagues, to walk out with him,” Hostin remarked.
She further emphasized the importance of unity in such critical moments. “Because alone you can survive, but together you thrive. That is the energy that we need. They should have stood with him in solidarity,” she continued. Hostin also referenced White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre’s recent appearance on The View, recalling her statement about the urgency required in confronting the current political landscape.
“And we had Karine Jean-Pierre here on this show yesterday, and she said we have to have a sense of urgency as we move forward, and we cannot do it the way we have in the past. This is not normal. It is a five-alarm fire,” Hostin stressed. She further insisted that Democrats must abandon conventional strategies when dealing with a Republican Party that, in her words, “has thrown away the rule book.”

The Democratic response to Trump’s speech was delivered by Rep. Elissa Slotkin (D-Mich.), whose performance was commended by Hostin’s co-host and former Trump aide, Alyssa Farah Griffin. While praising Slotkin’s approach, Griffin criticized the Democratic protests on the House floor.
“I thought that Elissa Slotkin was masterful, and I think she gave Democrats the winning message that they flailed to have. But I thought the antics on the floor were not helpful. I don’t think that waving a cane is the optics that the Democrats want in this,” she commented.
Hostin’s remarks triggered a backlash from conservative commentators who condemned her stance. One critic wrote, “Dems like her won Trump the election,” while another sarcastically suggested, “Sunny should run for office…that way she can show everyone how it’s done.”

Additional detractors called for The View to be taken off the air, with one individual labeling the hosts as “the dumbest folks on the planet.” Another critic mocked Hostin, stating, “Please please continue this Sunny! Everyone sees the true cloudy, miserable, & stormy person you are. Walking out on accomplishment is what you Dems do BEST!”
As political tensions remain high, the debate over the effectiveness of Democratic protest strategies continues to stir controversy.
