Stephen Miller’s Bold Immigration Crackdown Pushes U.S. Toward Constitutional Crisis

White House Deputy Chief of Staff Stephen Miller has reemerged as a dominant force within the Trump administration, more determined than ever to push forward President Donald Trump’s signature MAGA policies—especially on immigration.

Miller, who also serves as Trump’s Homeland Security adviser, gained a reputation during the president’s first term for his “creative zealotry” in navigating presidential powers to bypass legal obstacles, according to journalists Nick Miroff and Jonathan Lemire.

While his unconventional proposals once drew skepticism and even amusement among government lawyers and West Wing officials, “no one is laughing now,” Miroff and Lemire wrote Wednesday in The Atlantic. Miller is moving ahead with a bold and aggressive strategy.

“The White House point person on immigration is pursuing a strategy that is bedeviling his opponents and could provoke a constitutional crisis,” the journalists reported. This time, Miller’s approach has evolved, shifting toward an all-encompassing strategy designed to overwhelm opponents.

“He has unleashed an everything-at-once policy storm modeled after the MAGA guru Stephen K. Bannon’s ‘flood the zone’ formula,” they explained. “Drawing on policy ideas worked up in conservative think tanks during the four years between Trump’s terms, Miller’s plan has been to fire off so many different proposals that some inevitably find a friendly court ruling, three administration officials told us.”

The strategy offers Miller and the Trump administration “multiple ways to seal the border, shut down the U.S. asylum system, and ramp up deportations,” according to Miroff and Lemire. However, their report highlights that Miller’s most daring move yet was the administration’s use of the Alien Enemies Act over the weekend—directly defying a court order.

“Legal scholars say that the Trump administration’s deportation flights have pushed the country closer to a constitutional crisis than any other moves it has made,” the journalists warned in The Atlantic piece.

Miller has joined other top administration officials, including Trump himself, in harshly criticizing the federal judge who issued the ruling halting the deportation flights. His unwavering commitment to executing Trump’s immigration agenda has made him a central figure in the administration’s latest legal and political battles, raising concerns about potential constitutional confrontations in the months ahead.
