Senator Tim Scott of South Carolina, a Republican and potential vice-presidential candidate for Donald Trump, has ignited a storm of controversy with his response to a question about accepting the results of the 2024 presidential election. During an interview on NBC News‘ “Meet the Press” on Sunday, Scott’s comments raised eyebrows and drew criticism across social media and political commentary.
The backdrop to this controversy involves former President Donald Trump, the presumptive Republican nominee for 2024, who has consistently claimed that the 2020 election was stolen through widespread voter fraud—a claim that lacks substantial evidence. On Wednesday, Trump reiterated his belief in an interview with the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel, stating he won Wisconsin in 2020, although official results confirmed President Joe Biden’s victory in the state by more than 20,000 votes.
In the interview with Kristen Welker on “Meet the Press,” Scott was asked directly if he would commit to accepting the 2024 election results, regardless of the winning party. Notably, Scott had previously voted to certify the 2020 election results and expressed his belief that the election was not stolen. However, his response in the interview was less definitive and sparked concern.
“Will you commit to accepting the election results of 2024, bottom line?” Welker inquired. “At the end of the day, the 47th president of the United States will be President Donald Trump. I’m excited to get back to lowering inflation, lower unemployment—,” Scott responded, sidestepping a direct commitment.
When Welker pressed further, asking if he would accept the results “no matter who wins,” Scott reiterated, “That is my statement.” Welker pushed for a clear “yes or no answer,” highlighting, “I don’t hear you committing to the election results.”
Scott then criticized the media, particularly NBC, suggesting it acted as an extension of the Democratic Party. “This is why so many Americans believe that NBC is an extension of the Democratic Party. At the end of the day, I’ve said what I said. I know that the American people, their voices will be heard. And I believe that President Trump will be our next president. It’s that simple,” he stated.

The government watchdog group Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington (CREW) commented on the dangers of Scott’s stance, stating, “The fact that Tim Scott is refusing to say he’d follow the law and not try to overthrow the results of a free and fair election should scare anyone listening.
