Republican Officials Rally Behind Kamala Harris in Pennsylvania: “Trump Cannot Be in the Oval Office Again”
Vice President Kamala Harris is set to campaign in Pennsylvania with more than 100 Republican officials who have crossed party lines to support her presidential bid against Donald Trump. Among the prominent figures joining her is former Republican congresswoman Barbara Comstock, a vocal critic of Trump who has long opposed his return to the Oval Office.
Speaking to The Daily Beast while en route to Pennsylvania, Comstock emphasized the stakes of the 2024 election, warning of the threat Trump poses to American democracy. “He just cannot be in the Oval Office again,” Comstock said, expressing confidence in Harris’s chances of victory. “I think there’s a silent majority. I think there’s a silent group of women who will crawl over broken glass to vote against Trump and who will quietly vote for Harris.”
Comstock, who represented Virginia for three terms in Congress and famously called for Trump to drop out of the 2016 race after the release of the Access Hollywood tape, is part of a growing number of Republicans determined to prevent Trump from reclaiming the presidency. She will be joining Harris at a campaign event on Wednesday at Washington Crossing Historic Park in Bucks County, a historically significant site near Philadelphia where George Washington led his troops across the Delaware River during the Revolutionary War.
Reflecting on Trump’s fitness for office, Comstock did not mince words, saying, “I cannot have a rapist in the Oval Office.” She compared her previous outrage over President Bill Clinton’s misconduct in the 1990s to her deep concerns about Trump. “I was offended by Clinton – but, oh, that was nothing compared to this.”
Comstock, 65, has consistently refused to support Trump in his previous campaigns, choosing to “write in” another candidate rather than voting for him. Now, alongside fellow Republican dissidents like former New Jersey governor Christine Todd Whitman and former congressman Adam Kinzinger, she is actively campaigning for Harris. The group hopes to reach out to conservative voters who may not fully understand the gravity of Trump’s impact on constitutional order.
“People haven’t even heard of ‘Hang Mike Pence!’ because they watch Fox News,” Comstock added, referencing the infamous chant from the January 6 Capitol riot. The gathering of Republican officials with Harris is aimed at raising awareness among voters about the dangers they believe Trump poses, as they work to build bipartisan support for her campaign.
