Social media erupted in anger Thursday night following revelations that elite law firm Paul, Weiss, Rifkind, Wharton & Garrison had struck a deal with President Donald Trump, prompting widespread accusations of “capitulation” and cowardice from legal professionals and political commentators.
Earlier that day, Trump rescinded a controversial executive order targeting the law firm’s security clearances. The reversal followed a private meeting between Trump and Paul Weiss Chairman Brad Karp, during which an agreement was reportedly reached: the firm would provide $40 million in pro bono legal services during Trump’s presidency, primarily directed at fighting antisemitism and assisting veterans.

In return, Paul Weiss agreed to review its hiring practices and eliminate all diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) policies. The firm also acknowledged alleged misconduct by a former partner who investigated Trump while working with the Manhattan District Attorney’s office.
The move drew immediate condemnation from across the legal and political spectrum. Critics claimed the firm had bowed to political pressure and compromised its integrity. “Frankly, this is shameful on the part of Paul, Weiss. The executive orders targeting law firms are an existential threat to the legal industry. Capitulation is not the answer,” said Anna Bower, senior editor at Lawfare.

Conservative lawyer George Conway went further: “‘Shameful’ is too kind a word. But you’re right, this kind of moral cowardice will not pay off. Especially for people who care to look at themselves in the mirror every morning.” Conway revealed he had messaged the chairman of Sullivan & Cromwell, a law firm representing Trump in a criminal appeal:

“Impressive, Bob. You got Brad Karp to disgrace himself more than you disgraced yourself!” Other prominent voices also weighed in. National security attorney Mark Zaid wrote, “I would be embarrassed if I was a lawyer at #PaulWeiss. To compromise principles in this way is not why I became a lawyer.”
Journalist Jen Rubin questioned future talent recruitment: “Serious question: Why would ANY graduating law student go work at Paul Weiss?” Former Republican and podcast host Jack Hopkins summed up the sentiment bluntly: “Paul Weiss is a coward and Donald Trump just won in a terrifying way.” As criticism mounts, Paul Weiss has not yet issued a public statement addressing the backlash.
