Michelle Obama has revealed that her greatest fears today are not for herself, but for vulnerable communities in America, particularly immigrants and people of color. Speaking on the “On Purpose with Jay Shetty” podcast, the former first lady opened up about the issues that keep her awake at night.
“In this current climate, for me it’s what’s happening to immigrants,” Michelle shared when asked about her latest “test of fear.” “It’s not the fear for myself anymore. I drive around in a four-car motorcade with a police escort. I’m Michelle Obama. I do still worry about my daughters in the world, even though they are somewhat recognizable,” she continued.

While acknowledging her safety, Michelle stressed that the same could not be said for ordinary citizens. “My fears are for what I know is happening out there in the streets all over the city,” she insisted. Joining Michelle on the podcast was her brother and co-host of the “IMO” podcast, Craig Robinson.
He shared a memory from childhood when a Black police officer falsely accused him of stealing a new bicycle. Michelle used her brother’s experience to highlight the broader challenges still facing minority communities today.

“There’s so much bias and so much racism and so much ignorance that fuels those kinds of choices,” she said. “I worry for people of color all over this country, and I don’t know that we will have the advocates to protect everybody.” “And that … frightens me, it keeps me up at night,” she added, the New York Post reported.
“How do you feel comfortable going to work, going to school, when you know that there could be people out here judging you and who could upend your life in a second — that’s who I worry for right now.” Michelle also appeared to criticize President Donald Trump’s immigration policies without directly naming him.
“Now that we have leadership that is, sort of, indiscriminately determining who belongs and who doesn’t,” she shared, adding, “We know that those decisions aren’t being made with courts and with due process.” These comments echo Democratic concerns that Trump misused historical laws, such as the 1798 Alien Enemies Act, to escalate deportations, while promoting tough measures at the U.S.-Mexico border.
Michelle also addressed lingering speculation about her absence at Trump’s 2017 inauguration, explaining it was not politically motivated. “It started with not having anything to wear,” Michelle admitted on her “IMO” podcast.

She elaborated, “I walk around with the right dress, I travel with clothes just in case something pops off. So I was like, if I’m not going to do this thing, I’ve got to tell my team, I don’t even want to have a dress ready, right? Because it’s so easy to just say, let me do the right thing.”

Michelle insisted her decision was based purely on logistics, not politics, despite public rumors about tension within her marriage to Barack Obama.
“My decision to skip the inauguration, what people don’t realize, or my decision to make choices at the beginning of this year that suited me, were met with such ridicule and criticism,” she said. “People couldn’t believe that I was saying no for any other reason, that they had to assume that my marriage was falling apart, you know?”
