Firebrand Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) delivered sharp words late Wednesday for fellow Republicans hesitant about Elon Musk’s sweeping federal government cuts under the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE). CNN’s chief congressional correspondent, Manu Raju, reported that he spoke with both Musk and Greene after Musk met with House lawmakers.
Some of these lawmakers have recently faced combative town halls over the drastic government downsizing. “One of the big debates that has been happening on Capitol Hill is whether to give Congress a larger say in all of this,” Raju said. “Because this has been happening—these cuts and purges that have been happening across the federal government—have been happening at an administrative level.”

He added, “Congress has really been cut out of this process, and that has been a concern from a number of members, particularly some who oversee key committees. [They] want him to slow down, or at least be involved in the consultation process.”
One lawmaker, when asked if Congress should have a vote on such sweeping changes, responded that they “already have a vote” through spending legislation but do not have the power to codify Musk’s reforms into law.
“There is that debate on Capitol Hill about codifying cuts that DOGE is making,” Raju explained. When asked whether he would support Congress having more input on these cuts, Musk gave a noncommittal response: “Sure.”

Raju emphasized that some lawmakers are uneasy about the rapid pace of the changes and want to ensure there are no further “mistakes”—something Musk himself has acknowledged. Greene, who chairs a subcommittee overseeing DOGE’s budget reductions, was asked if she agreed with her colleagues’ concerns.
A staunch ally of former President Donald Trump, she had little patience for hesitation among her fellow Republicans. “When you hear some Republicans say he’s going too fast, slow down, what do you say to them?” Raju asked.

“I have not had any Republican tell me that personally,” Greene replied. When Raju noted that Republicans had voiced concerns to CNN, she fired back: “Well, you know what I have to say to them? They need to grow a backbone. We’re $36 trillion in debt.
And this is how you save the country.” As debate rages in Washington over Musk’s aggressive cost-cutting measures, the divide within the Republican Party appears to be widening, with Greene firmly on the side of rapid and drastic reform.
