When MAGA conspiracy theorist Laura Loomer took to social media to criticize former Trump press secretary Stephanie Grisham over her appearance, the internet swiftly came to Grisham’s defense. Grisham, who also served as Melania Trump’s press secretary and chief of staff, spoke at the Democratic National Convention on Tuesday night, told the Independent.

During her speech, she revealed that former President Donald Trump often mocked his own supporters in private, referring to them as “basement dwellers.” Grisham, who resigned on January 6, 2021—the day of the Capitol insurrection—explained her decision by saying, “I couldn’t be part of the insanity any longer.” She also endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris, saying, “Kamala Harris tells the truth, she respects the American people, and she has my vote.”

Loomer, known for her far-right conspiracy theories and anti-Muslim activism, responded by posting a screenshot of Grisham on X (formerly Twitter), accompanied by a derogatory comment: “Stephanie Grisham really hit the wall. Another traitor who got rich off Donald Trump and then turned on him on J6. I guess she started eating uncontrollably ever since she quit Trump. She must have gained about 75 pounds since she ‘resigned.’ Now she’s voting for Kamala Harris. That’s what happens when you hit the wall.”

The internet was quick to denounce Loomer’s remarks, with social media users rallying to Grisham’s defense. “What a hideous person you are…and it’s not even your looks,” one user fired back. Another questioned, “Why’s fat-shaming so easy for you, Republicans?” Others took aim at Loomer’s entire online presence, with one user commenting, “Your account and your conspiracies are trash. You can’t talk about the way anyone looks, Laura.”

Loomer has continued her attacks on DNC speakers throughout the week, including a jab at Oprah Winfrey, who spoke at the convention on Wednesday night. Loomer accused Winfrey of hypocrisy, claiming, “Oprah Winfrey begged Donald Trump to be his running mate. She’s a hypocrite and a liar. She is also so rich that the Democrat policies won’t make her suffer like they will make everyday Americans suffer.”

On Thursday, Loomer doubled down, expressing her frustration with the DNC: “I’m still stunned at the utter hypocrisy of the last 3 nights of the DNC. It is enough to make me feel disoriented and stunned. And that is saying a lot because it takes a lot to leave me stunned. Watching the DNC will make you feel like you live in an alternate universe.” Despite Loomer’s ongoing critiques, the backlash to her fat-shaming comments highlights the increasing pushback against body-shaming and the toxicity that often accompanies political discourse online.
