Former Wyoming Republican Rep. Liz Cheney made a passionate case for why the “party of [Abraham] Lincoln” should join her in voting for Vice President Kamala Harris over former President Donald Trump, calling Trump’s behavior a threat to the republic and highlighting his “depravity.”

Speaking in Ripon, Wisconsin—the birthplace of the Republican Party—Cheney addressed a crowd that responded with chants of “Thank you, Liz.” She noted that Wisconsin holds personal significance for her, as her parents, Dick and Lynne Cheney, were graduate students in Madison when she was born in 1966.

“Coming back always feels to me more than a little bit like coming home,” Cheney said, setting a personal tone before turning to the political stakes of the upcoming election, told Vogue.

Taking aim at Trump, Cheney quipped that she had been a Republican “even before Donald Trump started spray tanning,” eliciting laughter from the crowd. She described herself as a “Ronald Reagan conservative,” advocating for low taxes, limited government, a strong national defense, and the belief that the family—not the government—is the “most important structure in society.”

Cheney emphasized that the cornerstone of these conservative values is a commitment to the Constitution. “Above all else, I know that the most conservative of conservative values is fidelity to our Constitution,” she declared.

In a striking move, Cheney revealed that she would be casting her vote for Harris in the 2024 election. “I have never voted for a Democrat. But this year I am proudly casting my vote for Kamala Harris,” she announced to loud applause and chants of “Thank you, Liz.”

Harris, Cheney argued, is “standing in the breach during a critical moment” in the nation’s history, working to unite reasonable people from across the political spectrum. She praised Harris for her dedication to public service and commitment to leading for all Americans. “I am honored to join her in this urgent cause,” Cheney said.

Cheney then issued a stark warning to her party, stating that the republic is facing a “threat unlike any we have faced before.” She slammed Trump for refusing to accept the 2020 election results, calling his actions depraved. “In this election, putting patriotism ahead of partisanship is not an aspiration, it is our duty,” she urged, stressing that the peaceful transition of power is fundamental to the republic’s survival.

“Violence does not and must never determine who rules us. Voters do,” she said, underscoring the importance of safeguarding democratic processes. Cheney concluded with a powerful condemnation of Trump’s character, saying, “He is petty and he is vindictive and he is cruel. Any person who would do these things can never be trusted with power again.”
