Resolution Introduced to Censure Lauren Boebert for “Pimp Cane” Remark

WASHINGTON – Rep. Chrissy Houlahan (D-PA) introduced a resolution on Monday seeking to formally censure Rep. Lauren Boebert (R-CO) for what she described as “racist and derogatory” remarks directed at Rep. Al Green (D-TX), according to Punchbowl News’ Jake Sherman.

Green, who is Black, sparked outrage among supporters of former President Donald Trump earlier this month when he interrupted Trump’s congressional address, waving his cane and declaring that the former president had no “mandate” to cut Medicaid. Green was subsequently removed from the chamber, leading Republicans to pass a resolution censuring him last week.

Following the incident, Boebert appeared on the far-right Real America’s Voice News, where she mocked Green’s actions, stating that he was “shak[ing] his pimp cane” at Trump.

Houlahan condemned Boebert’s comments in her censure resolution, stating, “The words of the Representative from Colorado are disparaging, derogatory, and racist toward another colleague, and are a breach of proper conduct and decorum of the U.S. House of Representatives.”

In a statement, Houlahan elaborated on her decision to take action. “After my discussion on the House floor last week when Speaker Johnson told me he’d have to censure half the members if he actually enforced the rules of the Congress, I decided to help, and tonight introduced a resolution to censure Representative Boebert for her racist and derogatory statements about Representative Al Green (D-TX),” she said.

Boebert, a former restaurant owner who gained national attention for her strong stance on gun rights, was first elected to Congress in 2020, representing Colorado’s Western Slope. However, after a narrow re-election victory in 2022 and amid ongoing controversies, she opted to switch to a more conservative district on the opposite side of the state.

Since beginning her latest term, Boebert has continued to draw controversy. Most recently, she raised a false alarm about “a guy” in a women’s restroom on Capitol Hill. She also faced a highly publicized scandal after being caught on camera groping her date in public during a Denver musical production.

As the censure resolution moves forward, it remains to be seen whether House leadership will take up the measure. With tensions running high in an already deeply divided Congress, the controversy surrounding Boebert is likely to fuel further debate over standards of conduct within the legislative body.
