Lara Trump Suggested as Marco Rubio’s Replacement in Senate by Rep. Anna Paulina Luna
Republican National Committee co-chair Lara Trump may find herself in the U.S. Senate if Florida Governor Ron DeSantis heeds the call from Rep. Anna Paulina Luna (R-FL). Following the news that President-elect Donald Trump has selected Senator Marco Rubio (R-FL) as his nominee for Secretary of State, Luna voiced her support for Lara Trump as the best candidate to fill Rubio’s seat, should it become vacant.
Speaking with conservative podcaster Benny Johnson, Luna publicly urged DeSantis to consider the RNC co-chair for the Senate appointment. “I’m actually going to make a public call for Gov. DeSantis to appoint, um, Lara Trump to fill Marco Rubio’s term in office,” Luna stated. “I think that she is the best fit if he becomes Secretary of State, which I think he’s going to.”
Luna argued that Lara Trump’s appointment could help the Republican Party avoid a potentially divisive primary for the Senate seat when it comes up for election in two years. “I think Lara Trump would avoid a really nasty primary in two years when that seat then comes open,” she explained. Luna also praised Lara Trump’s qualifications, citing her experience within the Republican Party and her role in supporting her father-in-law, Donald Trump.
In her conversation with Johnson, Luna highlighted what she sees as Lara Trump’s accomplishments on the national stage, particularly in her work within Trump’s campaign network. “I think that she has the qualification,” Luna continued, asserting that Lara Trump has already “proved herself” by working to “secure President Trump’s win” and demonstrating her commitment to conservative values.
Beyond experience, Luna emphasized Lara Trump’s “pedigree” and the family name, suggesting that her close connection to the former president is a valuable asset. “I think that she would be the perfect fit,” Luna added. “And I think that she has all the qualifications to include the pedigree to be a wonderful U.S. senator.”
While Lara Trump has yet to comment on the prospect of serving in the Senate, her involvement with the RNC and experience in Republican politics could make her a strong contender for the role. Her political career began with her work as a producer for Inside Edition before joining her father-in-law’s 2020 campaign as an advisor. Since then, she has become a high-profile figure within the Republican Party, holding leadership positions and actively supporting conservative initiatives.
Lara Trump’s possible Senate appointment is one of many developments following Trump’s Cabinet picks as he prepares for his second term. If Rubio’s nomination is confirmed and the Senate seat is vacated, DeSantis will hold the authority to appoint a temporary replacement who could either serve through the remainder of Rubio’s term or until the 2026 special election. Given Florida’s political landscape, a figure like Lara Trump, with strong ties to the Trump brand, could be seen as an appealing choice to consolidate Republican support.
The suggestion of Lara Trump for the Senate underscores the influence of Trump’s inner circle in shaping the GOP’s future, as well as the ongoing sway of Trump’s legacy within the party. If DeSantis does consider Lara Trump, her candidacy could strengthen her family’s political presence and potentially bolster Republican unity heading into future elections.
