Conservative former Judge J. Michael Luttig spoke with MSNBC’s Nicolle Wallace on Thursday about growing attacks on judges and law firms by President Donald Trump’s administration. His remarks came in response to Trump’s latest executive order, which targeted the law firm Perkins Coie, known for representing former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton’s 2016 campaign.
However, U.S. District Judge Beryl Howell in Washington, D.C., swiftly blocked the order on Wednesday and will preside over the case. Wallace and Luttig linked this action to a broader pattern of intimidation tactics employed by Trump and his allies to pressure legal professionals who refuse to align with his directives.

Special government employee and tech billionaire Elon Musk amplified these attacks, posting on X that judges who rule against Trump should be impeached. Musk claimed these judges are “grossly undermining the will of the people and destroying America” and asserted that impeachment is “the only way.”
Following Musk’s comments, Reuters reported a surge in threats against judges, further intensifying concerns over judicial independence. Luttig condemned these attacks, stating they are part of “the same cloth of assault on, on the rule of law and the independent judiciary in America.”

He pointed to additional threats posed by Vice President J.D. Vance, referencing a Feb. 9 post on X and a 2021 appearance on a conservative podcast in which Vance suggested potential defiance of court orders. “The vice president is an intelligent man. He knew what he was doing, and he did that intentionally,” Luttig said.
Meanwhile, three House Republicans have introduced Articles of Impeachment against federal judges, according to a report by Axios on Tuesday. Luttig stressed the gravity of these developments, urging caution over such rhetoric. “Nicolle, this is a direct threat to the judiciary of the United States, and it includes the Supreme Court justices themselves,” he warned.

“I know for a fact that these threats and then these actual articles of impeachment have shaken the federal judiciary. But I also know that they—the federal judiciary—remain unshaken in their resolve to remain an independent branch, as the founders intended, and as the Constitution provides. And that they, as collectively as the federal judiciary, will not yield to these threats.”
He concluded with a stark warning: “If the judiciary doesn’t hold now, it will be the end of the rule of law in America and change our country forever.”
