Nebraska Governor Jim Pillen Hospitalized After Horseback Riding Accident: Stable and Recovering in ICU

Nebraska Governor Jim Pillen, 68, is recovering in the intensive care unit after being “bucked off” a horse during a family outing, resulting in multiple injuries, including broken vertebrae, broken ribs, and a spleen injury, according to reports.

The incident occurred Sunday while the governor was horseback riding with his family, NBC News reported. Following the fall, Pillen was rushed to a hospital “out of an abundance of caution” before being transferred to the University of Nebraska Medical Center (UNMC) for further treatment.

“The Governor is expected to remain at [University of Nebraska Medical Center] for several days,” the governor’s office stated in a press release. The statement confirmed that Pillen is alert and remains in “continuous touch” with his office as he recovers.

Doctors expect the governor to leave the ICU on Monday, with plans for him to stay hospitalized for at least one more day to monitor his recovery closely. Pillen, a first-term governor elected in 2022, has deep ties to agriculture and animal care, having previously worked as a veterinarian and owned a livestock operation.

His background in these fields has shaped much of his policy focus and public image as a leader closely connected to rural communities. The governor’s office has not provided a detailed timeline for his full recovery or when he will resume regular duties.

However, his team emphasized that he is receiving excellent care and maintaining active communication with state officials. The accident highlights the risks associated with horseback riding, even for experienced riders like Pillen. Though his injuries are serious, his alertness and stable condition are promising signs for his recovery.

Pillen’s tenure as governor has been marked by a commitment to Nebraska’s agricultural heritage, and his experience as a veterinarian has underscored his connection to the state’s farming and livestock communities. The incident, while unexpected, has drawn attention to his resilience and determination, traits he will likely rely on during his recovery.

As Nebraska residents follow updates on his health, the governor’s office has expressed gratitude for the support and well-wishes pouring in from across the state and beyond.
