Former MSNBC host Mehdi Hasan delivered a scathing takedown of Vice President JD Vance on Thursday, calling out what he described as outright dishonesty surrounding the deportation of Kilmar Abrego Garcia — a legally protected immigrant mistakenly sent to a notorious prison in El Salvador.
Speaking on Zeteo, the news platform he founded, Hasan criticized Vance’s continued defense of the Trump administration’s actions in the case, despite clear evidence that the deportation was based on a mislabeling. “Are we sending immigrants to foreign labor camps because of traffic violations, too, now?” Hasan asked. “You cannot make this s— up, but JD Vance can.”

Garcia, a Maryland father with protected immigration status and no violent criminal record, was wrongly labeled a gang member and deported during Trump’s presidency. Yet Vance recently insisted on social media that a court document proved Garcia was “a convicted MS-13 gang member with no legal right to be here.”
Hasan dismantled that claim. “The vice president of the United States – I know we’ve become numb to this, I know we’ve normalized this, which we shouldn’t have – but the vice president of the United States went onto a public media platform and told a journalist a flat falsehood,” Hasan said.

“Something flat false, something completely untrue, demonstrably untrue. He lied and said, ‘Look at the court document.’” “It doesn’t say he was convicted of any crimes,” Hasan continued. “JD Vance just made it up and put it out there.”
Instead of correcting himself, Hasan noted, “JD Vance doubles down. Think about what kind of human being you have to be that you get caught lying, you double down on the lie. He doesn’t admit that he was wrong to say ‘convicted,’ he says ‘a judge determined this.’”

The veteran journalist didn’t stop there. Drawing comparisons to other controversial figures, Hasan declared, “In many ways [Vance is] worse than Musk and Trump. Because JD Vance is supposed to be the Yale Law grad, the public intellect of the right, the best-selling memoirist, the man who’s married to a woman of color, the man who has humble origins — none of that applies to Musk and Trump, to be fair.”
“Trump could always have the excuse that ‘I lied because I’m insane,’” Hasan concluded. “What’s JD Vance’s excuse?”
