In a recent piece for Slate, Greg Olear delves into the stark contrast between Ivanka Trump’s public persona during her father, Donald Trump’s, presidency and the image she now curates on her Instagram. Describing it as an “alternate reality,” Olear highlights how Ivanka’s social media presence seems to meticulously omit any reference to her father’s controversial term in office, presenting a serene and untroubled existence seemingly untouched by the political upheaval of the recent past.

Ivanka Trump, who was a registered Democrat in 2016, chose to immerse herself fully in her father’s political campaign, despite the potential for a different path. She was not just a passive supporter; she was an active participant, introducing him at his campaign announcement, endorsing him publicly, and standing by him through numerous scandals and contentious policy decisions.

This included remaining silent during the Muslim ban, the Women’s March, the Brett Kavanaugh sexual assault allegations, and the mishandling of the COVID-19 pandemic. Olear questions the extent of Donald Trump’s influence over Ivanka, given her unwavering support throughout these controversies.

Yet, a glance at Ivanka’s Instagram feed reveals a carefully curated world far removed from these controversies. Her posts feature light-hearted moments, family time, and personal achievements, painting a picture of a life filled with joy, gratitude, and tranquility. The captions are thoughtful and gracious, devoid of any hint of the arrogance or entitlement that might be expected from someone of her background and recent history.

This crafted online persona suggests a deliberate attempt to distance herself from the political and social tumult associated with her father’s presidency. Olear posits that this deliberate construction of an alternate reality is a strategic move by Ivanka to reshape public perception and perhaps even redefine her identity post-presidency.

This effort to disassociate from her father’s legacy raises questions about the motives behind such a stark rebranding. Is it a genuine attempt at self-redefinition, or a calculated move to retain public favor and rehabilitate her image? The real tragedy, as Olear points out, lies in the missed opportunity for Ivanka to use her influential position to speak out against her father’s more controversial actions and policies.

Such a stand, Olear argues, could have had a significant impact, potentially altering the course of events and even saving lives. Yet, the cost of dissent within such a high-profile family, known for its loyalty and retribution, would have been substantial. The choice to remain silent, however, and the subsequent attempt to craft an idyllic online persona, suggests a complex interplay of personal, familial, and public considerations that continue to shape Ivanka Trump’s public identity.
