Jessica Aber, the former U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia (EDVA), has died at the age of 43. Her body was discovered on the morning of Saturday, March 22, at a residence in Alexandria, Virginia. According to a statement from the Alexandria Police Department, officers responded to a report of an unresponsive woman around 9:18 a.m. in the 900 block of Beverly Drive. Upon arrival, authorities found Aber deceased at the scene.
The cause of death has not yet been determined, and an investigation is ongoing. The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner of Virginia is expected to determine the manner of death. It remains unclear whether the home belonged to Aber or who initially contacted emergency services.

Aber had most recently made headlines when she resigned from her position as U.S. Attorney on January 20 of this year, coinciding with former President Donald Trump’s return to office. No statement regarding her resignation was issued at the time.
She was appointed to lead the EDVA by President Joe Biden in August 2021 and confirmed unanimously by the U.S. Senate in October of the same year. Her career with the Department of Justice began in 2009 as an Assistant U.S. Attorney. Over the years, she built a reputation for her work on cases involving financial fraud, public corruption, violent crime, and child exploitation.
Before her 2021 appointment as U.S. Attorney, Aber served as Deputy Chief of the Criminal Division for EDVA. She earned her law degree from William & Mary Law School in 2006.

Tributes to Aber have poured in from former colleagues and members of the legal community. Erik Siebert, the current U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia, shared a heartfelt statement on X.

“She was unmatched as a leader, mentor, and prosecutor, and she is simply irreplaceable as a human being,” Siebert wrote. “We remain in awe of how much she accomplished in her all too brief time in this world. Her professionalism, grace, and legal acumen set the standard.”
He added, “Though we are devastated by this loss, each of us in the Eastern District of Virginia will look to her example and endeavor to live up to that standard.” Condolences have continued to circulate across social media as the legal community mourns the loss of one of its most respected voices.
