According to an exclusive report by Axios, House GOP leaders are increasingly uneasy with a small group of hard-right Republicans who are pushing for a last-minute impeachment vote against President Joe Biden. Sources within the party indicate that top Republicans fear this effort “could hurt their campaigns” as the 2024 election season heats up.
The push for impeachment is being led by far-right House members such as Reps. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA), Andy Biggs (R-AZ), and Anna Paulina Luna (R-FL), remain determined to oust the president despite his term nearing its end. However, the move is not widely supported within the party.
“Even leadership doesn’t want it,” the report notes, highlighting the divide between mainstream Republicans and the more extreme factions of the party. One GOP member expressed frustration to Axios, emphasizing that the party should be concentrating on issues that resonate with voters. “The only thing we should be focused on is the issues that people talk about around their dinner table and keep them up at night,” they said, adding, “That’s not a Biden impeachment.”
Despite the lack of broad support, Axios reports that “just one member can force a vote,” raising concerns that the impeachment push could still gain traction, potentially disrupting the party’s efforts to maintain focus on key issues ahead of the election.
On the other hand, Rep. Andy Biggs voiced his worries during an episode of Steve Bannon’s War Room podcast last week, suggesting that GOP leadership might try to sideline the impeachment push. “I’m worried GOP leadership is going to say, ‘we don’t have time to do it,’” Biggs said, reflecting the frustration among hard-right members who feel that impeachment should be a priority.
The internal tensions within the GOP over this issue underscore the challenges the party faces in uniting its diverse factions as it prepares for the upcoming election cycle. With the clock ticking down on President Biden’s term, the push for impeachment may become a contentious topic that could either galvanize or further divide the Republican base.
