AOC Slams Senate Democrats for Backing GOP Stopgap Bill: Calls It a “Betrayal”

Progressive Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) has strongly criticized her Senate colleagues for disregarding her warnings against supporting the House GOP’s stopgap funding bill. Just hours before the vote, she urged Democrats to reject the measure, labeling it a “bad idea” and a “mistake” if Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) proceeded with cloture.

“I believe that’s a tremendous mistake,” Ocasio-Cortez stated during a CNN interview with Jake Tapper on Thursday afternoon. She referenced the contentious town halls recently held by Republican lawmakers, arguing that they signal widespread opposition to the MAGA agenda. “American people, whether they are Republicans, independents, Democrats, are up in arms about Elon Musk and the actual gutting of federal agencies across the board.”

Despite her plea, reports soon surfaced that Schumer would not obstruct the cloture vote for the GOP bill. He acknowledged the flaws in the continuing resolution but asserted that “allowing Donald Trump to take more power via a government shutdown is a worse option,” according to Semafor’s Burgess Everett.

Ocasio-Cortez did not hide her disappointment. “There are members of Congress who have won Trump-held districts in some of the most difficult territories in the United States; who walked the plank and took innumerable risks in order to defend the American people…just to see some Senate Democrats even consider acquiescing to Elon Musk. I think it is a huge slap in the face, and I think that there’s a wide sense of betrayal,” she told reporters, as reported by Semafor’s Kadia Goba.

The Democratic opposition to the continuing resolution stems from multiple concerns. Many lawmakers argue they were excluded from the negotiation process and criticize the bill for cutting billions from non-defense domestic spending while simultaneously boosting military expenditures. Additionally, they warn that it could empower former President Donald Trump and DOGE head Elon Musk to dismantle portions of the federal government or disregard congressional spending mandates.

Ocasio-Cortez and several other Democrats have advocated for a short-term, 30-day stopgap measure. They believe this would keep the federal government operational while providing additional time for negotiations to craft a more balanced spending plan. However, with the Senate moving forward, tensions remain high among progressive House members and Senate leadership over the direction of the party’s legislative strategy.
