11-Year-Old Boy Placed in Medically Induced Coma After Undergoing Routine Tonsil Surgery and ‘Throwing Up Blood’

An 11-year-old Wisconsin boy, Liam Klaver, was placed in a medically induced coma following severe complications after what was expected to be a routine tonsillectomy, his family shared in an emotional update.

Liam underwent surgery on March 17 to have his tonsils removed. Initially, everything appeared normal. But just days later, his condition took a terrifying turn. According to his parents, Dan and Ashleigh Klaver, Liam began vomiting large amounts of blood after returning home.

A GoFundMe page set up by family friends provided further insight, stating that Liam had suffered a “post-tonsillectomy hemorrhage in his right carotid artery.” The page explained, “In layman’s terms, his carotid artery — the main artery to the brain — was leaking since his surgery, causing him to slowly bleed out.”

As his condition worsened, Liam was rushed into emergency surgery, where doctors worked to stop the bleeding. During the procedure, he required nine units of blood and several additives. Tragically, he went into cardiac arrest on the operating table. “He coded on the operating table for 10 minutes before doctors were able to revive him,” the family revealed.

Following the surgery, doctors made the difficult decision to place Liam in a medically induced coma for his safety. Speaking to TMJ4 News, Liam’s grandmother, Tanya Coye, recounted the heartbreaking moment when he first showed symptoms. “He got his tonsils out on St. Paddy’s Day, the 17th. Three days later, he was throwing up blood,” she said.

Liam remained in the coma for 10 days. His parents provided an update on April 6, sharing that he had been removed from the ventilator on March 31 and was beginning to wake up. His mother, Ashleigh, said they had to gently explain to him what had happened.

“Liam is a very smart kiddo. With him more awake and all these doctors coming into the room, it was starting to scare him more, so Dan and I had to tell him a little more,” she wrote on GoFundMe. “We told him that he had his tonsils removed and there was a little complication that caused us to bring him to the hospital, and for his safety, we had to put him to sleep for 10 days.”

Ashleigh said Liam struggled with the news and broke down in tears, expressing his desire to go home. Still, she noted, he is “making great improvements every day.” TMJ4 News reported that doctors discovered a blood clot in Liam’s artery, and he will likely require another surgery. Despite this, his care team is optimistic about his recovery.
