Toshiba Excites with new High-resolution Tablets
Toshiba has announced three new additions to its Excite range of Android tablets, two of which beat the Retina iPad and rival the Nexus 10 in terms of display resolution. All three run Android 4.2 (Jelly Bean) and will hit Toshiba’s online store on June 25, ahead of more widespread availability from July 7.
The Excite Pro and Write models are the first Toshiba tablets to feature a native screen resolution of 2560 x 1600, and are powered by Nvidia’s Tegra 4 quad-core processor. The Pure, on the other hand, has a lower display resolution and sports a Tegra 3 power house, but is priced accordingly.
The Excite Pro features a sharp 10.1-inch PixelPure IPS display with a pixel density of 300 ppi. The processor is supported by 2 GB of DDR3 RAM and 32 GB of internal storage, with microSD expansion. To the rear are quality Harman Kardon stereo speakers, that work with DTS Premium Voice Pro audio processing technology to offer bass-enhanced natural output and audio leveling.
There’s a 1.2-megapixel webcam to the front, and an 8-megapixel F2.2 camera to the back, boasting high dynamic range and panoramic capabilities and image stabilization technology. Completing the supplied specs are included micro-HDMI and micro-USB ports. This model carries a suggested retail price of US$499.99.
At the top of the Excite tree is the Write, which shares many of the same features as the Pro, but its display is topped by Corning Gorilla Glass 2. This model is supplied with a TruPen digitizer for handwriting and note-taking (on the company’s own TruNote app, naturally). Toshiba says that, with help from 1,024 pressure points, the stylus/pen brings a pen and paper experience to tablet computing.
Pitched at students and mobile digital artists, the Write ships with a full version of ThinkFree Office Mobile for Android and benefits from a TruCapture application that uses the tablet’s 8-megapixel camera to record whiteboard content and convert it to a snapshot for importing into presentations and documents. Its suggested retail is $599.99.
The last of the Excite tablets is the budget-friendly Pure. This model has a 1280 x 800 resolution AutoBrite display, and includes 1 GB of DDR3 RAM and 16 GB of solid state storage (with microSD expansion) to support that Tegra 3 mobile processor. There’s a 3-megapixel front-facing camera (no camera at the rear), and both micro-HDMI and micro-USB ports. The Pure carries a suggested retail price of $299.99.
