A 43-year-old Iowa man faces a mandatory life sentence after being convicted of murdering a mother who rejected his catcalls in a random, early-morning attack. James Bernard Johnson was found guilty of first-degree murder on Wednesday for the July 27, 2024, killing of 42-year-old Nikki Loffredo.
Prosecutors said Johnson shot Loffredo on a sidewalk just before 4 a.m. after she dismissed his advances. “Who are you? Never mind, f–k off,” Loffredo, a bartender, responded when Johnson yelled at her from his SUV, according to the Polk County Attorney’s Office.

Authorities said Johnson, enraged by her response, pulled out a handgun and fired four shots at Loffredo before fleeing. She was struck multiple times and died two days later in the hospital. Johnson later claimed he had only meant to scare her by shooting at the ground, but evidence proved otherwise.
The two had no prior connection, prosecutors emphasized. Johnson had seen Loffredo earlier that day and targeted her when he encountered her again. Investigators arrested Johnson on August 2 after uncovering incriminating text messages in which he told his girlfriend he had “popped” someone.

Prosecutors revealed Johnson was under the influence of marijuana and cocaine at the time of the shooting, though it remains unclear whether his intoxication influenced his actions. Johnson, who has prior drug-related convictions, stood trial last week. Jurors deliberated for just hours before delivering a guilty verdict.
Sentencing is scheduled for June 20, where Johnson could receive life in prison without parole. Loffredo’s family remembered her as a loving and generous woman. “She was very kind and compassionate, and was always willing to help anyone in need,” they said in a statement.

According to her obituary, Loffredo adored her nephews, often treating them to movies and Chuck E. Cheese. Her sudden and violent death has left the community in shock, with advocates highlighting the dangers women face from street harassment and male aggression.
The case has reignited discussions about accountability for gender-based violence, with local activists calling for stricter enforcement against harassment. Meanwhile, Loffredo’s family prepares for a future without her, as her killer awaits his fate behind bars.
