Body of Missing CU Boulder Student Megan Trussell Found in Remote Boulder Canyon

Authorities in Colorado believe they have found the body of 18-year-old University of Colorado-Boulder student Megan Trussell in a rugged, hard-to-reach area of Boulder Canyon.

Trussell was last seen on Sunday, Feb. 9, at her residence hall wearing dark-colored yoga pants, a blue/gray jacket, and white platform sneakers. A missing persons report was filed for her on Wednesday, Feb. 12, but there had been little information on her whereabouts—until now.

The Boulder County Sheriff’s Office confirmed that a deceased person matching Trussell’s description was discovered near mile marker 40 in Boulder Canyon on the morning of Feb. 14. Open Space and Mountain Parks rangers alerted authorities to the presence of a deceased female around 10:40 a.m.

Officials have not yet confirmed the body is Trussell’s, as the Boulder County coroner will conduct an autopsy to officially determine the identity and cause of death.

The search and recovery efforts were particularly challenging due to the difficult terrain. “The decedent was found in hard-to-reach terrain, requiring a technical evacuation including the need to rappel,” the sheriff’s office stated in a press release. Boulder Canyon Drive was even temporarily shut down to allow authorities to safely retrieve the body, especially with hazardous weather conditions complicating the process.

It’s still unclear how Trussell ended up in the remote canyon or what may have led to her disappearance. State and local agencies have been working together since she was reported missing, and now, they are focused on uncovering the circumstances surrounding her tragic fate.

The University of Colorado Police Department acknowledged the heartbreaking development, stating that they are working to confirm further details. “CUPD is working to confirm additional details and will communicate those as soon as we are able,” the department said.

For now, investigators are piecing together what happened to the young student as friends, family, and the CU Boulder community await answers.
