Man in Las Vegas Allegedly Kills Ex-Girlfriend’s Father Over Dog-Related Dispute

(Vegas Metropolitan Police Department)

Police have apprehended a 51-year-old man linked to the death of his ex-girlfriend’s 69-year-old father following a confrontation over a dog last year. The incident was reported by the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department. On the evening of June 11, 2023, just after 5 p.m., law enforcement was called to the scene on Maryland Avenue in the 3900 block.

They discovered Larry Vargas outside the residence, unresponsive. He was quickly taken to Sunrise Hospital but was later pronounced dead. The dispute, according to police, arose between Vargas and Roman Ramirez over a pet. Reports suggest that Ramirez had gone to the residence to collect a dog that he and his ex-girlfriend co-owned.

According to an arrest report reviewed by KSNV-TV, During the altercation, it is alleged that Ramirez pushed Vargas multiple times, leading to Vargas falling and hitting a palm tree, which resulted in multiple abrasions. Ramirez was detained by police on the same day. In his interaction with the authorities, Ramirez claimed that Vargas had struck him first, prompting him to push Vargas in response.

Upon being confronted with video evidence that contradicted his version of events and informed of Vargas’ death, Ramirez responded by indicating that if that was the case, he should be charged with murder and taken to the county detention center. Initially, Ramirez was booked into the Clark County Detention Center on charges of battery causing substantial bodily harm to an elderly individual, pending further investigation by the Clark County Coroner’s Office.

On February 8, the coroner’s office concluded that Vargas’ death was a homicide, attributing it to cardiac arrhythmia triggered by the altercation. Following this determination, on February 22, authorities re-arrested Ramirez, who had been released on bail. He was then charged with open murder and is currently being held without bail in the Clark County Detention Center.
