Dad Strangles Mom After Losing Money on Family Bingo Night

A murder trial has heard how a father strangled his partner to death in a rage after losing money during a family night out at bingo. Alcwyn Thomas, 44, admits killing Victoria Thomas, 45, a “much-loved” mother of two, but claims her death was the result of a “sex game gone wrong.”

The court was told that Thomas had consumed around 16 pints of lager and taken cocaine on the night of August 19 last year, leaving him in a “bad mood” after losing his stake money at Bingo 3000 in Gabalfa, Cardiff. Prosecutor Michael Jones KC said the couple, who had been together for four years, argued in a taxi home over Thomas’s gambling losses.

Later that evening, a neighbor heard a scream from their home in Birchgrove, Cardiff. Thomas then sent messages from Victoria’s phone claiming he had killed her, before adding he was “only joking.” However, when his niece arrived to check on Victoria, she found her dead on the floor of the spare bedroom.

Thomas, who was found in his own bed after an apparent overdose, later wrote letters from prison insisting Victoria had asked him to strangle her during sex and that her death was accidental. “He maintained it was sex gone wrong and that it was during, to use his words, ‘erotic asphyxiation’ that she had died,” Mr. Jones told the jury The Sun.

The prosecution rejected Thomas’s claims, arguing that he strangled Victoria in a fit of anger or frustration. “When he deliberately strangled Victoria Thomas to death, he knew full well what he was doing, why he was doing it, and whether it was in anger or frustration, that is certainly no excuse and absolutely no defense to murder,” Mr. Jones said.

The court heard that Victoria had openly discussed her “adventurous sex life” with friends, including the use of sex toys and filming each other, but never mentioned consensual strangulation. Mr. Jones accused Thomas of exploiting her openness to “excuse himself” from his actions.

Thomas denies murder but admits manslaughter. Victoria’s family paid tribute to her, saying, “As a family, we are devastated that our much-loved daughter, mother, sister, aunt, niece, and friend has been taken away so tragically. Our family is broken, and we will miss her forever.” The trial continues.
