49-Year-Old Woman Allegedly Falls Over 50 Feet to Her Death While Hiking as Three of Her Children Watch

A 49-year-old woman died after falling during a family hike at Purgatory Chasm State Reserve on Wednesday, April 23, according to the Sutton Police Department (SPD). Carolyn “Carrie” Sanger was hiking with three of her four children and other relatives when she plummeted 50-75 feet into the chasm.

Authorities received an emergency call around 1:45 p.m. reporting the fall at the popular hiking spot, known for its steep granite walls, caves, and cliffs. “There were multiple medical professionals in the area hiking the Chasm at the same time, and were able to provide medical attention right away,” SPD stated. Despite immediate aid, Sanger succumbed to her injuries and was pronounced dead shortly after.

While the fall appears accidental, an investigation remains ongoing. Friends and family remembered Sanger as a devoted mother and a radiant presence in their lives. Tim and Brooke Paoli, close friends of the Sanger family, shared their grief publicly. Brooke launched a GoFundMe to support the family, writing, “She was a bright light; a wonderful, selfless mother who has raised four incredible, respectful, responsible kids.

She was a friend to all, and her smile and kind spirit will be greatly missed. She passed too early—but she left the earth doing what she loved, with the ones she loved. ❤️.” Tim Paoli told Boston 25 News that he learned of the tragedy when Sanger’s husband, Mike, called him. “I answered the phone by saying, ‘Mike, do you know who they’re talking about (from Topsfield)?’” Tim recalled. “‘Yeah, Tim, they’re talking about Carrie.’ And we lost it.”

He described the incident as a tragic accident, stating, “We believe it was simply a loss of footing and a trip. That particular part of the trail, my understanding is, it’s a scarier part of the trail. We don’t believe she was on her phone or anything like that.”

Sanger, a former oncology nurse, had recently shifted careers to focus on holistic healing. She became a licensed massage therapist and Reiki practitioner, operating her own studio, Balanced Body, in Topsfield.

Mo Levasseur, a colleague, told Boston 25 News, “She was an amazing light to the world, really.” Reflecting on her sudden passing, Levasseur added, “We’re quite shocked today to have lost her, but we’re also blessed that she was in our path during the past year and a half.”

Jamie Belsito, a close friend, remembered Sanger’s warmth. “She could show up in a room, light up a room, and give you a hug, and you felt that warmth. She was a safe place, you could talk to her about anything.”

Belsito vowed community support for the grieving family, saying, “You do the best you can. And you try to raise strong, healthy, wonderful children like she did. And her husband, Mike, will continue to do that. And we’ll be here as a community to take care of them.” The incident has left the tight-knit community mourning the loss of a beloved mother, healer, and friend.
