Authorities have identified the five victims of a devastating suspected murder-suicide that unfolded Saturday night in DeKalb County, Georgia. The victims include one-year-old Jontavious Powell, five-year-old Jedorah Powell, their 43-year-old grandmother Mollian Johnson, and 25-year-old Kaylyn Samuel. The suspected shooter, 42-year-old Jonathan Darden, is believed to have taken his own life after the killings.

The tragic incident occurred at an apartment complex on Vineyard Walk and is being investigated as a domestic dispute. Police report that Darden was dating Johnson, a beloved member of the community who is now being mourned by neighbors.

“She was such a sweet lady,” shared Pauline, a neighbor. “She was the candy lady for the kids. My own children would go to her after school to get snacks. It’s devastating to know something so horrible happened to her and her family.”

Pauline, who lives near the scene, described her heartbreak upon learning of the violence, especially as a survivor of domestic abuse herself. “It’s horrifying to know he not only took her life but the lives of those innocent children. It’s just unthinkable.” She added that the traumatic event has deeply affected her own children, leaving them shaken, reported FOX 5 Atlanta.

Another neighbor, Tina Marie, echoed the community’s shock and grief. “You never expect something like this to happen. It’s so shocking, especially when children are involved—it hurts to even think about it.” Preliminary findings from the police investigation suggest that Darden “snapped” before committing the unthinkable act.

Pauline emphasized the need for people in abusive relationships to seek help, urging others to recognize the warning signs before it’s too late. “Love shouldn’t have to end in tragedy,” she said. “I hope this serves as a warning to others—please get out while you can.”

The community now grapples with the loss of Johnson, a woman remembered for her kindness and the joy she brought to those around her. Her grandchildren, Jontavious and Jedorah, are mourned as innocent victims of a senseless act of violence.

As the investigation continues, police are working to determine the events that led to the horrific tragedy. In the meantime, neighbors are left mourning and reflecting on the fragility of life and the importance of seeking help in times of crisis.
