Locklynn Boler, a vibrant four-year-old from Ohio, is fighting for her life after a severe case of the flu led to cardiac arrest and irreversible brain damage. Described by her aunt as a “strong-willed, feisty little girl with so much life in her,” Locklynn tested positive for flu A on February 21.
Just three days later, she collapsed while getting up to use the restroom at 4 a.m. and became unresponsive. Her mother, Haley Boler, immediately performed CPR while her father, Brad Boler, rushed them to the hospital. Upon arrival, Locklynn went into cardiac arrest, a moment her parents described as a “parent’s worst fear.”

After several agonizing minutes, doctors managed to restart her heart. She was then placed on a ventilator and airlifted to Nationwide Children’s Hospital in Columbus. An MRI revealed devastating news: Locklynn’s brain had been deprived of oxygen during the cardiac arrest, resulting in a deep brain injury “that will affect her for the rest of her life.”
Her family was told she would likely never walk, eat, talk, or play with her siblings and cousins again. On March 2, the family shared a glimmer of hope when Locklynn woke up and her ventilator was removed. However, by the next day, she was struggling to breathe on her own and had to be placed back on the ventilator.

Brad Boler called the situation a “nightmare,” telling ABC6 that the family followed all medical advice, including breathing treatments and steroids after Locklynn tested positive for the flu. “I used to be that kind of person that was like ‘Oh it’s the flu, you’ll be ok.’
I’m telling you this thing can take your guys’ babies away from you in a blink,” he said. A fundraiser has been set up to support the Boler family as they navigate this heartbreaking ordeal. Locklynn’s story serves as a stark reminder of the flu’s potential severity, urging parents to remain vigilant.
