SHERMAN, Texas (KXII/Gray News) – A heartbreaking incident occurred on Wednesday when three-year-old twin girls drowned in the swimming pool at an apartment complex in Sherman, Texas. The tragedy has left the community in shock and investigators searching for answers.

The Sherman Police Department and EMS were called to the Ridgeview Apartments off West Washington Street after the twins were discovered unconscious in the pool where they lived with their parents. Eyewitness Carrie Curry, a resident of the complex, described the tragic scene as it unfolded. “This is a sad moment,” Curry said. “This is so sad, and it’s a prayerful moment. We need to pray for our children. We really do, take care of your babies.”

Curry recounted the urgency with which the apartment complex staff responded. “I was leaving my apartment, and I saw the commotion with the ambulance and fire trucks and stuff,” she explained. “So, I went in behind the police officer’s car and I saw everybody at the pool. When I looked across there, the maintenance man was standing there. He’s soaking wet”, CBS News reported.

According to Sherman Police Department’s administrative lieutenant Kevin Garbacik, the maintenance staff discovered the children in the pool and immediately attempted to save them. “Two small children somehow were able to get into the pool,” Garbacik said. “Maintenance found them in the pool. They were already underwater. Maintenance was able to pull them out and start recovery efforts with them.”

Despite their efforts, it was too late to save the twins. “At this time, the two children have expired. They did not make it,” Garbacik somberly added.

The incident has raised questions about how the children ended up in the pool and where their parents were at the time. Garbacik emphasized the importance of constant vigilance, noting how quickly children can find themselves in dangerous situations.

Curry echoed this sentiment, urging parents to be ever-watchful of their children. “Parents, if you have children, keep your eye on your children, always know where they are, whether they’re in the house or outside,” she pleaded. “Take care of your babies. They’re our future.”

As the community grieves, the Sherman Police Department’s Criminal Investigation Division continues to investigate the circumstances surrounding the tragic drowning. The names of the victims have not yet been released.
