A Maryland funeral home owner was found guilty of second-degree murder on Thursday for fatally shooting a pallbearer during the burial service of a 10-year-old girl, according to the Prince George’s County State’s Attorney’s Office. The tragic incident occurred in June 2023 at Washington National Cemetery in Suitland, where 50-year-old Wilson Wesley Chavis, owner of Compassion and Serenity Funeral Home, was overseeing the burial of Arianna Davis.
Arianna, who had been killed a month earlier in a Mother’s Day crossfire shooting, was being laid to rest when the violence erupted. Chavis, who was present at the cemetery, confronted two attendees who were associated with a rival funeral home.

According to police, Chavis had a “long-standing business dispute” with the competing funeral home. One of the individuals he confronted was the pastor leading the service. Charging documents reveal that Chavis pushed the pastor and shouted, “This ain’t your f— funeral home,” as mourners prepared to gather at the gravesite. When funeral attendees intervened, Chavis allegedly drew a gun and opened fire, told Local NBC.
One of the bullets struck and killed 30-year-old Ronald Banks, a pallbearer for Arianna. Chavis fired another shot, grazing a woman and causing minor injuries. State’s Attorney Aisha Braveboy condemned the violence in a press release, stating, “When acts of violence occur at places that should be sacred like funeral homes and cemeteries, it’s horrific.
With this guilty verdict, Mr. Chavis will be held accountable for his reckless, callous actions.” Chavis was convicted not only of second-degree murder but also of reckless endangerment and the use of a handgun in the commission of a violent crime. He now faces up to 65 years in prison. His sentencing is scheduled for July 11.
