Affordable Solar System “Moonswatches” by Omega & Swatch
The Omega Speedmaster Moonwatch is one of the most famous watches in the world. Known for adorning Buzz Aldrin’s wrist when he set foot on the lunar surface during the Apollo XI mission in 1969, the Speedy is an iconic watch and a must-have for any serious watch collector. However, the Omega flagship’s $6,000+ price tag puts the luxury watch out of reach for many enthusiasts. But Omega has teamed up with Swatch to find a cheaper alternative… 11 to be exact.
Two sister brands, both subsidiaries of the giant Swatch Group, have introduced the Omega x Swatch Bioceramic MoonSwatch. Modeled after the legendary Moonwatch, these Swatch watches feature quartz chronograph movements in a case made from Swatch bioceramics, a mixture of two-thirds ceramic and one-third castor oil.
The dimensions of the watch are the same as a real Speedy Pro, its case measures 42mm, and various design features such as turned handles, embedded sub-dials, asymmetric case, Super-LumiNova lume, and even the “dot” are perfectly recreated. Total station frame over 90″.
The collection consists of 11 different models, each representing 9 planets (including Pluto), the sun, and of course the moon, each based on a separate “mission” to a destination in the solar system. Some of our favorites are Mission to the Moon, which is styled to look just like Omega’s regular Moonwatch; Mission to Mars, red and white with hands inspired by the legendary “Project Alaska” Speedmaster; and the Uranus Mission, which comes in a light blue color alongside the Tiffany, which is very trendy at the moment.
All 11 watches in the Omega x Swatch Bioceramic MoonSwatch collection are sold with VELCRO straps very similar to the NASA watches sold by Omega, and the battery cover on the back of the case of each reference includes an image of the celestial body associated with its saint connected is mission. . MoonSwatches will be available only at select Swatch retailers starting March 26 and retail for $260.
