Martha Stewart Reveals Why Matthew McConaughey Once Terrified Her

Martha Stewart recently admitted that Matthew McConaughey’s intense method of acting left her startled while filming a Super Bowl commercial together. During the March 11 episode of The Martha Stewart Podcast, the lifestyle mogul spoke with actress Kate Hudson about her experience working with McConaughey for the 2025 Super Bowl ad.

“He got me scared actually,” Stewart confessed. “Oh my God, yeah, he scared me.” McConaughey, known for his deep immersion into roles, was tasked with portraying 10 different characters in the commercial—something Stewart had not anticipated.

“He is a method actor,” she explained. “He had to play 10 characters, and he got into each character. It takes him about fifteen minutes.” Hudson, who starred alongside McConaughey in How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days and Fool’s Gold, immediately recognized the behavior Stewart was describing.

“And he’d make weird sounds,” Hudson recalled, laughing. Stewart, still amused by the experience, confirmed it. “He’s grunting and breathing and jumping,” she said, as Hudson mimicked the sounds in the background. “And that scared me.”

Hudson reassured Stewart that McConaughey’s unique preparation style takes some getting used to. “You get used to it after like the first couple of weeks,” Hudson said with a laugh. Stewart, clearly entertained by the thought, quipped, “You probably just wanted to tell him to shut the hell up.”

Despite the on-set surprises, Stewart walked away from the experience with admiration for McConaughey’s dedication. Hudson, who has worked with him extensively, echoed that sentiment.

“McConaughey is one of the most fun people to work with for me because energetically we’re both very competitive, so we have this thing when we’re working together that’s really fun,” Hudson said.

She also described his “flirtatious” energy, while Stewart summed it up simply: “Boy, he’s fabulous.” Even if McConaughey’s method of acting initially caught Stewart off guard, it’s clear he left a lasting impression—grunting and all.
