The woman who accused Jay-Z of sexual assault when she was a teenager is now asking a judge to dismiss the rapper’s defamation lawsuit against her, claiming the case is legally unfounded. According to People magazine, the woman, referred to as Jane Doe in court filings, filed a motion on Tuesday, April 22, seeking to shut down the lawsuit brought by the music mogul.
In December 2024, Doe accused Shawn “Jay-Z” Carter and fellow music executive Sean “Diddy” Combs of sexually assaulting her at an MTV Video Music Awards afterparty in 2000, when she was just 13 years old. The lawsuit was voluntarily withdrawn in February 2025, but Jay-Z responded in March with a suit of his own.

In that lawsuit, Jay-Z claimed Doe and her legal team engaged in malicious prosecution, abuse of process, civil conspiracy, and defamation. He described the original allegations as “false” and “malicious,” alleging they were part of a coordinated attempt to extort him.
Now, in her legal response, Doe argues that Jay-Z’s case does not meet the necessary legal standards to proceed. Her motion to dismiss states that the rapper “fails to state a claim upon which relief can be granted,” and that his claims of conspiracy and abuse of process are not sufficiently supported under California law.
Regarding the defamation accusation, Doe’s legal team maintains that her original statements were “absolutely privileged” under the law, given that they were made in the context of legal proceedings.

Jay-Z, however, contends that the accusations caused significant harm to both his personal and professional life. He alleged that his company, Roc Nation, suffered damages exceeding $20 million and that the ordeal inflicted considerable emotional distress.

“This person cannot be allowed to sort of hide from the reality that this was a false accusation,” Jay-Z’s attorney, Alex Spiro, previously told Good Morning America. Doe’s attorney, Tony Buzbee, quickly fired back, calling Spiro’s statement “a blatant lie,” suggesting the legal clash is far from over.
The case, which intertwines serious criminal allegations with a high-stakes civil battle over defamation and reputational damage, has drawn intense media attention. As both parties stand firm, the outcome will likely set the tone for how similar high-profile cases are handled in the future. A judge has not yet ruled on the motion to dismiss.
